The bedroom is the most personal and intimate space in a home and thus, the one best suited to express the owner's style. Most of the time, comfort takes precedence here, followed by the aesthetic side.

When we think about the modern design of a bedroom, images of a harsh, cold space or something very futuristic may come to mind. However, we must not forget that the modern style has existed for some time now; it should not be confused with a futuristic style nor with the ever-changing contemporary style.

What does modern style mean?

The modern movement, based on the famous concept “form follows function”, created a strong link between the functional and the artistic, eliminating the frivolity of ornaments. In its time, modernism created an astonishing contrast with the then-popular Art Deco style.

Strongly influenced by the economic crisis generated by World War II, the modern style imposed useful and practical architectural choices that saved time and money. Mass production, which gained momentum during that period, also contributed to better management of resources and raw materials used. The production of stainless steel and plastic increased during this period.

With the advent of the modern style, structural elements of homes began to be exposed, valuing their natural beauty (brick walls, concrete pillars, pipes).

We can easily recognize a modern interior by its compartmentalization, zoning through furniture pieces, simple finishes with a few precious accents that do not overload the space, natural materials and the geometric shapes used.

The modern style in architecture and interior design should not be confused with the contemporary style, which is fluid and constantly evolving. The frequent confusion arises from the fact that the modern style is still very popular and therefore also contemporary.

Mid-century, Scandinavian, minimalist styles

In the case of American modernism (or mid-century modernism), functionality remains the main characteristic of the style, but bright and saturated colors also appear, as the 1950s were heavily influenced by pop artists such as Andy Warhol, for example.

Also in the 1950s, the aesthetics of the space age emerged, with futuristic accents in the design of everyday objects, a trend that was also incorporated into American modernism."1
