This summer, give your balcony or terrace a chance to shine with a makeover that suits its style. To help you in this endeavor, we've found these 7 terrace redesign models that you can use as inspiration. We mention that all were created by a landscape architect, and the common denominator of all these terraces was the outlining of green areas. Here's what came out.

Opening the Gallery The first makeover is for a terrace that needed a new face. It had never been landscaped and was exposed to quite a lot of wind. The landscaper relied on a few shrub-type plants in large pots, with which he created partitions, such as a dining area. Hanging plant panels provide protection from the wind.

With the help of a pergola, climbing plants such as jasmine, hydrangea or honeysuckle create a true oasis of greenery in the middle of the city.

The second proposal is for a small balcony, on which the owner had previously tried to transform it into a greener space, but his attempt failed.

As you will see in the image before the makeover, the space is quite narrow, so the landscaper adapted the landscaping concept using narrower but taller pots to allow the plants to develop their roots. This created a hedge along with grapevine and roses.

The next terrace had been somewhat neglected, and the plants hadn't thrived very well, mainly due to its south-facing orientation which is not ideal for many types of plants. The solution proposed by the landscaper was to replant those that could be saved and bring in new species of plants, especially Mediterranean ones, much more resistant to strong sunlight.

An automatic plant watering system was also installed to ensure they wouldn't dry out, as the owners didn't have much time available to care for them.

The fourth makeover is for a terrace that urgently needed a transformation. The dirty walls of the building and the storage space did not offer a particularly beautiful view. The landscaper's proposal was truly creative: the walls were hidden with the help of willow and tall bamboo weaving.

The green space is now the terrace's attraction, outlined with plants such as ferns, ivy and yew (a hardy ornamental shrub), all easy to maintain.

This terrace was practically unusable, although it had remarkable potential due to the heritage building in which it was located. The solution proposed consisted of creating a floor from exotic wood to serve as the basis for the future landscaping. Several perennial plants were added and a small relaxation area was created in their center.

For this terrace, intervention was more than necessary. The existing vegetation was not well maintained and poorly organized, so the generous space of the terrace was not being well utilized. A wooden pergola with climbing plants was chosen. Underneath it, the landscaper envisioned a pleasant and green dining area.

Thanks to the stone walls surrounding the terrace (the apartment being on the top floor of the building) and the created pergola, the terrace ensures an intimate space.
