If you are in the middle of a renovation, but facing difficulties in decorating your living room due to its small size, we thought we'd put together some tips to guide you further in its decoration.
Open the Gallery Approach the space as functionally as possible. Think about its main function and your needs; then, take some simple measurements that will be helpful when you go shopping for furniture. Keep in mind that in some cases it is recommended to call on a specialist to make custom-made furniture.
This way, you can be sure that the pieces integrate harmoniously into the decor.
Be realistic! Even if you desire a certain sofa model that has won you over in the store, make sure it will fit in your small living room. Otherwise, you risk choosing an unsuitable model that will take up more space than you desired.
Therefore, choose elements with reduced dimensions, proportionate to the room and possibly with a simpler, more compact design: a 2-seater sofa, a table (preferably round) and a bookcase with open shelves or of medium height (see also the models in the photo gallery).
Keep the living room decor as airy as possible and don't clutter it with furniture! In most cases, a sofa, coffee table, a few shelves or a modular bookcase are enough for this room. Moreover, the furniture pieces should not all be stuck to the wall. The best example is the sofa.
You can position it in a central area of the room, thus acting as a separator between the conversation area and the kitchen in the case of an open space or to visually delimit the dining area from the rest of the room. You could also set up a desk behind the sofa, thus delimiting the two functions.
Avoid bulky furniture! Opt for models with legs to fluidize the room.
Choose to paint in light shades. White, cream, ivory, cappuccino, pale yellow or light gray are among the recommendations of interior designers to create a pleasant and bright interior that you can easily match and accessorize.
Stay away from wenge furniture; although it seems easy to integrate into the decor, in reality you will only end up closing the already small space of the living room.
Pay due attention to lighting! Even if we are talking about a small living room, a single chandelier will not be enough. On the contrary, make sure that you provide varied lighting for the room, using wall sconces, table lamps, floor lamps or decorative spotlights.
Give up heavy and dark-colored curtains. Choose curtains that pleasantly filter natural light (but do not color it). You can opt for Roman blinds in case the living room faces south.
