Old houses have a special charm that we rarely realize these days. Facades with ornaments, interiors with high ceilings and stucco, floors made of solid wood or decorative cement tiles, all give such a dwelling an original air that we forget to appreciate today, being overwhelmed by too many gray and dull blocks.
But the life of these houses can continue in a beautiful way if they are given the chance to be rehabilitated and consolidated. Brought into the contemporary era with a suitable arrangement, these buildings are reborn and join an architectural and cultural heritage that each of us should respect.
In this spirit, we chose this apartment layout, not very large, but sufficient to live comfortably. The building is located in the historic center of the city of Torun in Poland, one of the oldest settlements in the country.
The arrangement started from a reconfiguration of the apartment space for optimization of the surface and an increase in functionality. The new layout is modern, warm and welcoming, suitable for a young person or a couple. High ceilings, the exposed brick wall or the one with parquet tiles are just some of the highlights of the new decor.
The apartment seems brighter now thanks to a white background and neutral shades that amplify the space. The different types of lights used, both accent and ambient ones placed in key points, manage to highlight the textures and finishes used.
The exposed brick wall painted white, sprinkled with small black accents highlights the dining area of the apartment. The black table, the black pendant light fixture, the black clock, the white chairs and a pleasant diffused light all harmonize perfectly.
And in the kitchen area we will find the same brick wall as an accent element between the main cabinets and the suspended ones. The furniture incorporates the appliances and takes advantage of the height of the room by going up to the ceiling with the upper cabinets (although access is slightly hindered precisely because of the height and the constant need to have a chair at hand).
For the bedroom, the chosen shades are excellent. A very light blue-gray reflects a state of relaxation and comfort enhanced by the lights of the 2 pendant lamps on either side of the bed. In the bathroom, the built-in niches offer welcome storage spaces for both cosmetics and other specific products.
The favorite spot in this layout? The living area with that wonderful chandelier (a high ceiling allows for such a light fixture), 2 comfortable sofas and curtains that dress the windows and give the entire space a discreet elegance.
