The global initiative World Sleep Day aims to provide solutions for creating a personalized sleep space, encouraging people to prioritize rest and achieve quality sleep. Inspired by this endeavor, IKEA South East Europe recently conducted a detailed regional study on sleep habits.

To gain an in-depth understanding of the sleep practices of residents in Southeast Europe, IKEA collected extensive data through a survey in Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, and Serbia.

How Romanians Sleep: Revelations from the IKEA Study

The study highlighted several specific aspects for Romania:

Multifunctional Bedroom: For 63% of Romanians, the bedroom serves constantly or occasionally as both a resting space and a work area, underscoring the need for versatility.

Sleep Duration and Comfort: Although general sleep and wake-up habits are similar in the region, Romanians stand out for their longer sleep duration – an average of 7.2 hours during the week and 8.1 hours on weekends. This trend emphasizes their constant concern for increased comfort, essential for restful sleep.

Unexpected Habits: A significant percentage of 46% of Romanians admit that they sometimes fall asleep in the clothes they wore during the day. The reasons often cited include extreme fatigue, dozing off in front of the television, alcohol consumption, or illness.

Pre-Sleep Activities: Among the most common habits before bedtime, Romanians mentioned watching television (68%), taking a shower (59%), and using mobile phones (57%).

Relationships and Individual Preferences: Over half of the respondents consider intimacy with their partner to be their preferred evening ritual. At the same time, a considerable percentage (35%) of participants, regardless of their family status, admit that they prefer to sleep alone.
