I'm often asked how to best position a rug in the living room, so today I've decided to analyze this topic and offer you a practical guide for future reference.

A rug's role is to dress a space, providing it with texture and highlighting a particular area of the room, creating points of interest.

One general rule is to position the rug so that it sits under the front legs of the sofa or armchairs/chairs, creating a sense of cohesion in the socializing area. The back legs should remain free on the floor.

In this case, try to position one-third of the rug under the sofa to balance the room's proportions. It is good to know that there are exceptions to this rule. The sofa or armchairs can be placed with all legs on the rug. This happens especially in small rooms, where space limitations force us to adapt to existing conditions.

There are also living rooms where furniture pieces do not touch the rug. This is a type of placement, especially for a sofa or armchairs whose base does not touch the floor. These are types of furniture supported by thin legs.

For large rooms, we recommend using a long rug type that covers most of the furniture pieces. Ideally, there should be a small distance between the walls and rug a portion of approximately 45 centimeters from the floor along the entire perimeter of the room.

For the dining area, the rug should encompass the space under the table, with chairs preferably having all legs on the rug. Again, there are variations depending on the available space.

The model, color, and texture are basic criteria that it is good to consider in the overall arrangement. A rug with a geometric pattern will, in turn, add an extra accent to the room. Also, the color of the rug will unify the general chromatic palette of the room. In recent years, designers have resorted to at least an interesting method, that of overlapping rugs.

For those who wish to experiment, I highly recommend this type of arrangement.

In this living room, the rug is placed under the sofas, providing cohesion to the entire space.
