The variety of types, models and sizes for bathtubs can put you in difficulty when you have to decide on a model. The final choice should be a combination of appearance, comfort, degree of resistance, ease of maintenance and, of course, cost. Here are the most well-known materials:

Fiberglass

A fiberglass bathtub is made by forming layers of fiberglass until the desired shape is obtained. It is then covered with a special resin. Due to the speed of the manufacturing process, compared to other materials, the cost is lower. The advantages of this material are: affordable cost, ease of installation, a finish that can be repaired.

Disadvantages – these tubs are fragile, and the finish scratches easily, potentially cracking and looking unpleasant.

ameled steel

Another widely used material, more durable than fiberglass and easy to clean. The finish is resistant to chemicals and retains its shine for a long time. As a disadvantage, enamelled steel tubs are heavier and surfaces can chip. Shapes and sizes are very limited.

Acrylic

Acrylic bathtubs use layers of fiberglass under layers of colored acrylic, the advantages being those of fiberglass tubs, although acrylic tubs are more expensive. The finish can scratch or discolor, although recent technologies are trying to minimize this. The material allows, on the other hand, for more varied shapes, sizes and colors.

Cast iron

If you are looking for a durable material, cast iron is a wise choice. Cast iron tubs are made by pouring molten steel into a mold with the desired shape. It is then coated with enamel. It is probably the most resistant bathtub model, and the finish resists scratches and most chemicals.

There are numerous shades available, and the massive material retains the water temperature for a long time. As disadvantages, they are very heavy and require extra work for installation (and sometimes even floor reinforcement). They are among the most expensive on the market.

Among the less common materials, we list:

Solid surface (composite)

Relatively new to the bathtub market, solid surface materials are durable, retain heat for a long time and are available in a variety of colors. The finish can be repaired if needed and models support unusual shapes and varied sizes. As a disadvantage, they are expensive and difficult to handle.
