In recent times, the term eco-friendly has become widely used in various settings, from public speeches and advertisements to product packaging. This term has been associated with so many products and practices that its meaning has begun to take on diverse connotations.
Simply put, eco-friendly means those products or actions that lead to a healthier lifestyle for both the planet and its inhabitants.
vironmentally friendly, ecological, and green are the main Romanian counterparts of the term eco-friendly, all referring to a friendship relationship between humans and the environment. This includes products or practices that conserve and protect the environment, as well as those that encourage people to reduce unnecessary water and energy consumption.
Being environmentally friendly is more than just a trend; it tends to become a lifestyle that involves caring for ourselves and the environment. From recycling materials to selective waste collection or using water and electricity in moderation, everyone can participate in this phenomenon to a greater or lesser extent.
Products manufactured in a sustainable way can also be called eco-friendly. These products are non-toxic, recyclable, and biodegradable. People who follow an eco-friendly lifestyle are guided by three rules in their daily lives: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Anyone can contribute to this phenomenon by developing ecological habits that help us use as few resources as possible.
Turning off lights in empty rooms, installing lighting systems with sensors, installing aerators for bathroom faucets, or programmable thermostats so that the heating or cooling system only works when you are home are just a few of the habits we can adopt to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
Companies can also adopt such practices or take larger initiatives, such as company-wide recycling programs for natural resource conservation, or providing transportation for all employees, which reduces air pollution and fuel consumption by eliminating daily commutes to work in personal vehicles.
A product can be classified as environmentally friendly if it is made from recycled materials, or if it is manufactured locally using raw materials produced in the respective area, using techniques that do not harm the environment. And in the case of wood use, tree felling must be compensated by planting others in place of those cut down.
Eco-friendly constructions
A large part of the energy consumed at the European level is used for heating homes. How could this problem be solved? If new buildings were more energy efficient, they should be built from materials that insulate very well thermally.
It is also important that the material used for masonry is made from raw materials that do not affect the natural balance.
Passive houses could also be included among eco-friendly constructions, as they offer a comfortable indoor temperature both in summer and winter, with low energy consumption but without having a conventional heating source.
