Comparing the photos taken before and after the renovation of this Toronto apartment, it's hard to believe how such a drastic visual change was possible, even though the space itself remained the same.

From a dwelling with a traditionalist, cluttered, outdated, impersonal, and bland design, it transformed into a modern, bright home that exudes elegance, refinement, and a relaxed fresh air.

Designer Anne Hepfer was responsible for the renovation of this house. She saw the potential of this space and maximized it to the fullest.

The house is located in a historic neighborhood in Toronto and belongs to an archaeologist who wanted a modern makeover of his home for himself and his family. Thus, the architect tried to create an interior that would fit the historical look of the dwelling and created neutral spaces to highlight the impressive art collection owned by the owner.

“Art was the starting point of this renovation,” says Hepfer. “I aimed for a professional reproduction of the clear vision the owners had for this place. The artworks needed to be highlighted by a neutral backdrop in order to stand out.”

The basic principle was mixing the old with the new, the masculine with the feminine, and the modern with the traditional, resulting in a harmonious space with luxurious accents.

Gray and white were used for decorating the rooms, along with some metallic shades. This made the interior appear much brighter, suitable for a young family with artistic inclinations.

Adding geometric patterns to wallpaper, furniture pieces, or rugs provides some depth to the rooms, while splashes of color brought by flowers or other accessories make this home bold and mature.

To make the living room appear larger and brighter, a huge mirror was installed on one of the walls. It creates a sense of spaciousness, being a trick often used when visually expanding a space.
