Date palms are fruit trees from the palm family that can reach heights of 25 meters and have very large leaves, approximately 2-3 meters in size. The fruits offered by these palms are dates, which are extremely delicious and beneficial to our health, especially when consumed fresh.
In Romania, we most often find dehydrated dates. While very tasty, they are quite sweet and contain significant amounts of sugar, similar to figs which are also typically found in a dried form.
To plant date palms, a very high temperature is required. They need sun throughout the year, and the more heat and water they receive, the larger they will grow, under optimal conditions, yielding the most delicious and voluminous fruit.
Curmalii are not very demanding fruit trees, but they need plenty of sunshine and water, especially during long dry periods.
Starting from a pit extracted from fresh dates, you can grow your own palm tree, right at home. Date pits need to be left in water for 24 hours to be properly moistened, after which they should be placed in damp napkins inside sealed bags.
The process is similar to that of germinating orange and lemon seeds, and if you've grown citrus before, it will be easy for you to grow a date palm as well.
Samburii should be left in the vacuum-sealed bags and kept well moistened in a warm place, but not exposed directly to sunlight. After approximately 3 weeks, you will notice them beginning to sprout. If you desire more efficient growth, you can leave the seeds to germinate for one to one and a half months, during which time they will develop impressive roots.
