Our family has grown, so what was the solution to increase the living space for our five members without having to move into a larger house? Transforming the unused attic of the house into a loft!

Nine years ago, when young couple Lucy and Matt moved into their three-bedroom house in Lancashire they believed they had enough space. That was until three children came into their lives, who over the years needed a space of their own.

The bridge renovation works lasted four months, during which time the insulation and roof were redone, and four VELUX roof windows The attic was converted into a bright dormer, with minimal disruption allowing the family to remain in the home throughout the project.

The small, cramped space where we used to keep boxes of old books, suitcases and toys has transformed into the house of our dreams, say the two. Adding an extra level was a clever solution that helped them avoid moving to a larger home. Now, the attic is a living space in itself, very comfortable, with a bedroom, bathroom and dressing room.

Four dormer windows play a significant role in defining this space.

Lucy and Matt knew from the beginning that they wanted this space to be filled with natural light, and the optimal solution was represented by the four VELUX roof windows.

Indoor plants also benefit from a perfect growing environment, as they receive natural light during the day. I knew I wanted a dark color for the walls, and the contrast it creates with the natural light coming through the four dormer windows is wonderful! Then, I added the wooden parquet flooring and white and gold decorations, which I matched to the dark blue of the walls.

The accent of natural green is provided by indoor decorative plants.
