Halloween is approaching fast. And what would Halloween be without a beautifully carved pumpkin with funny patterns to brighten the atmosphere? It's time to learn how to carve a pumpkin. Here's what you need to do.

Open GalleryFirst of all, we need a pumpkin. You can buy it from the market or the supermarket. Choose a healthy pumpkin, without spots or ridges, of medium size, suitable for the pattern you want to carve. If you want to make a more elaborate one, choose a larger pumpkin. It's also important when you buy it: with a maximum of one week before Halloween.

If you choose to carve it a few days in advance, keep it in a bucket with a little water to keep it moist and as intact as possible.

Choose how you will carve it. Usually, a serrated knife and a pointed object, like an awl, are used to precisely create the pattern. To make your work easier, draw the desired pattern on the pumpkin with a marker. You can also use printed templates and trace the lines of the design. Children can be involved in this type of DIY project.

They will surely have fun drawing on the pumpkin.

Prepare your work surface. Spread out some newspapers or bags for easier cleaning later. Using the knife, cut off the pumpkin's lid. You can carve it in the shape of a star for an extra effect. It is important not to make a perfectly vertical cut but to angle the knife slightly towards the center of the pumpkin so that the lid can then sit firmly and not sink inside.

After removing the lid, clean out the pulp with a regular spoon or an ice cream cup. Clean it as well as you can so that the light can penetrate through the walls of the pumpkin as much as possible.

Now is the time to carve the chosen pattern. Cut gently with back-and-forth movements and don't rush! Remove the remaining pieces along the way and continue until you have finished the pattern. In the gallery, you will find some ideas for inspiration for the pumpkin design.

Then think about how you will light it up. You can use candles, but make sure there is enough oxygen for them to burn; it is advisable to remove the lid for efficient ventilation. For stability, place a piece of wood on the bottom of the pumpkin and then secure the candles.

With an LED candle, you'll be able to enjoy Halloween without worrying about accidents.
