Plum trees, like most fruit trees, need careful maintenance and occasional pruning to grow and produce fruit optimally. If you have the possibility to care for them throughout the year, it is recommended to prune plums twice a year, once in spring and once in late autumn.

Pruning will help the plum tree grow uniformly and as healthily as possible and will strengthen the trunk so that it can safely support as many new, fruit-laden branches as possible.

The first branches you should cut are those that grow inside the crown, as they will get tangled up with each other and hinder the growth of the tree. These twigs should also be cut to allow the plum tree to receive as much sunlight as possible.

Diseased or damaged branches should also be cut, as they could have a negative impact on the entire tree, potentially infecting it completely.

When pruning plums, make sure you cut the unwanted twigs as close to the mother branch as possible, so that new branches will grow in a good direction and will start bearing fruit in the following years.
