Rice is one of the most consumed foods by Romanians and, being so common in our diet, we rarely ask ourselves: "How does rice grow?". This plant is specific to South and Southeast Asia, with China being the world's largest rice producer.
Open GalleryRice grains need special conditions to grow, but if these conditions are met, you can even grow rice at home.
Even if it won't serve you for very many meals, needing entire crops to have a considerable production, rice is an extremely aesthetic plant, and if you plant it at home, you will have the opportunity to eat fresh rice grown right in your garden.
Rice needs a lot of water to grow, being cultivated in flooded fields, constantly irrigated. This plant practically grows in mud and needs a lot of water throughout its life.
To plant rice at home, you need a very large pot or a suitable bucket, which does not have holes on the bottom, thus preventing the water from ever draining from the container in which the plant was placed.
Once the rice grains are planted in a bucket or a pot without drainage holes, make sure there will always be approximately 3-4 cm of water above the soil level. If you want to plant rice directly from the seedling stage, it must be introduced into soil with a lot of mud, and the roots of the plant must be fixed directly under the water.
