We have all seen a multitude of different types of plants, flowers and trees, but very few of us have had the opportunity to see Rafflesia arnoldii, which is the largest flower in the world, reaching truly shocking dimensions.
This flower has an incredibly beautiful appearance, which stands out both through its uniqueness, but especially through its very large size. Another factor that draws attention to this giant flower is its unbearable smell, which is likened to the smell of rotting meat.
Due to its horrific smell, this magnificent flower is also called the "Corpse Flower", it being specific to the forests of Borneo and Sumatra, settlements located in Southeast Asia.
Rafflesia arnoldii is one of the 3 national flowers of Indonesia and was classified as a rare national flower on November 4, 1993, by presidential decree. This flower reaches a diameter of approximately 1 meter and can weigh up to 11 kilograms.
The first botanist who found such a flower was French explorer Louis Auguste Deschamps (1765-1842), who was simply stunned by the incredible size of Rafflesia arnoldii!
