Canadian designer Phillipe Malouin has created a piece of furniture ideal for those struggling with small spaces. “Occasional Furniture” is an ingenious way to utilize a chair even when no one is sitting on it. The backrest of the chairs designed by Malouin has a unique shape: that of a hanger.

Thus, when the chairs are not in use, they can be folded and stored in a closet, hung from a bar. At the same time, they can also support freshly ironed clothes, saving even more space.

This piece of furniture could be successfully used in living rooms for example, where the already limited space is divided between two or four people, and visits from other colleagues are frequent, especially during sessions.

To avoid taking up space intended for a desk or other essential pieces of furniture and to avoid suffocating the room, hanger chairs are an excellent solution. The only downside would be their width. They are quite wide, so they could become problematic if closets are not deep enough.

Designer Philippe Malouin works in London, where he opened his own studio in 2009 after working alongside Tom Dixon. He was recently awarded the ‘Designer of the Future’ Award and teaches at the Royal College of Arts in addition to his personal project P OS T-O FF IC E which deals with interior design and architecture.
