The architects were tasked with efficiently optimizing the space and creating multiple storage solutions in this 21 square meter Berlin residence.
The results visible in the photographs are truly remarkable: a bright 21 square meter studio apartment that includes a bathroom, a living area, a bedroom, and a kitchen.
Originally, this space was divided into two small rooms, one of which was likely a kitchen and the other a small bedroom.The Bath the commune being located one floor below.
Architects had to reconfigure the layout of this disproportionate space and adapt it to modern times where the owner needs a certain degree of autonomy, and creating a bathroom within the dwelling was absolutely necessary.
The client of the recently renovated apartment needed to benefit from several well-proportioned and comfortable zones: a sleeping area, a restricted living area, a small but fully equipped kitchen, plenty of storage solutions and other modern amenities, a compact bathroom with a shower, a large sink, and a toilet.
The ingenious solution for integrating a bathroom into this space was to create a cube above which a sleeping area could also be arranged.
The innovative structure of this two-square-meter bathroom was the key element of the design, as most functional elements are attached to it: above, a small mezzanine-style bedroom with a skylight; and on the bathroom walls, kitchen cabinets, the bathroom ventilation system, concealed sanitary accessories, living room storage solutions, an entry niche, and a sliding door for the bathroom.
The new elements were designed to integrate perfectly into the original frame of the room without touching the exterior facade or ceiling. This provides a certain spatial continuity of surfaces and an unconventional design.
The windowsill was slightly extended to become a workspace overlooking the building's inner courtyard, and in the kitchen, the other windowsill becomes a useful shelf for plant pots.
