June, the first month of summer, is a vibrant and active period in the garden. Tradition describes it as a bridge between spring and summer, a time for planting, sowing, but also for the first fruits. Preparations for autumn and winter also begin now.

June brings with it the scent of linden trees in bloom, the last acacia flowers, the explosion of roses and lavender, offering the satisfaction of the first harvests of the work done in spring.

I. General Work and Garden Maintenance in June

June requires attention to detail to ensure the health and prosperity of the garden throughout the summer.

Intelligent Watering: Water the garden every two days, preferably in the evening or very early in the morning. On cloudy days, the water requirement may decrease.

Tip: Collect rainwater; June can be a rainy month, and the collected water will be precious in the following drier months.

Strategic Fertilization: Administer fertilizers to flowering plants and those you want to stimulate growth. Ideally, apply after a rainy day.

Caution: In very hot periods, plants slow down their growth and absorb nutrients more slowly. Excessive or unnecessary application of fertilizers can burn the roots. Do not apply fertilizer to tomato seedlings until they have finished flowering, so as not to excessively stimulate leaf growth at the expense of fruit.

Soil Preparation and Maintenance: Certain areas in the garden where plants (e.g., lettuce, spring flowers) have completed their cycle need to be dug up and re-sown.

Tip: Dig wherever possible. It is said that a good spade does as much as a rain shower!

Lawn Maintenance: Mow the lawn frequently, even twice a week, to keep it healthy and thick.

Composting: Prepare or maintain the compost making area, essential for fertile soil.

Garden and Household Element Maintenance: Check and refurbish wooden elements (gazebos, benches, tables, swings, fences). June is the optimal time for painting/varnishing or new constructions.

It is an ideal time for major repairs in the house and garden (painting, renovations), considering the long days and the whole summer ahead.

Clean the garage, tool sheds, repair the garden shed, birdhouses, roof. Check the installations (central heating boiler, water pump) and clean the well.

II. Ornamental Plant Care

June is a month of maximum splendor for many flowers, but also a time of hard work to prolong this beauty.

Pruning for Stimulation and Maintenance: Annual and perennial plants: Cut off faded flowers to encourage a second round of flowering and to maintain the neatness of the bushes. You can use the cut flowers for decorative arrangements.
