Continuing the series of articles in which we invited architect Maria Romanescu to advise us on various useful topics regarding the arrangement of our homes. Today she talks to us about balcony design.

The balcony should be a wonderful place when you live in an apartment building. It is the area that makes the transition from outside to inside and believe me when I say that it is not by chance that it is designed from the start as an open space. The impulse of most people is to enclose it, so that it later becomes a storage space or a non-functional extension of the room.

This approach eliminates the idea of (a small) terrace and implicitly the joys it offers: enjoying your morning coffee or, why not, a place to have meals; a reading corner, an area for discussions between friends, a small space for painting, writing or whatever your passion may be. Above all, if the view is in your favor, you have every reason to cherish the balcony through proper arrangement! Let's see how:

1. Simple means beautiful. And spacious!

Although most terraces do not excel in square meters, this aspect should not be a discouragement. On the contrary, with the right arrangement, you can obtain an intimate and comfortable space without any hassle.

Adopt a clean style with minimal interventions to create as spacious an area as possible. Neutral colors and light shades will be the background that will highlight the balcony's accessories even more.

2. Flooring

Choose wooden flooring for a welcoming atmosphere. This advice is all the more recommended, especially in the case of terraces facing north or generally in a shady area. In the case of a logia-type balcony, you can accentuate this effect by cladding the side walls with the same finish.

For added comfort during the warm season, you can add a rug. Create the impression of depth in the space by using a striped pattern positioned parallel to the short side of the balcony.
