Iconic figures for modern fashion, international supermodels have access to the intimate world of trends and design innovation. Their personal style is shaped through contact with renowned creators who constantly push the boundaries of concepts that then become trends.
American supermodel Karlie Kloss embraced eclecticism and a relaxed spatial feel when decorating her new West Village home, reflecting her age and lifestyle.
To harmonize her ideas as best as possible, she enlisted the help of renowned interior designer Nate Berkus, asking for a result that would say, without further ado, "a modern and active person lives here.
Along with his interior design team, Berkus reconfigured the home's space, taking into account the lifestyle of his client Karlie, who travels extensively for photoshoots, an activity that involves a high degree of fatigue.
Therefore, it needs airy, bright interiors with a tempered chromatic palette, where high-end accents are the only elements that will stand out as stylistic statements.
The house had originally been fitted with a wooden floor in various shades, a detail Berkus found tiring. Interestingly, the designer chose not to replace the floor but to paint it. "Floors in bold, vibrant colors are a youthful and very fresh touch for a home.
Wood is a precious material and if the floor is professionally installed from the beginning, it's a shame to destroy it. In Karlie's case, I preferred a pale white shade to bring the entire home's color scheme together. From there, I started adding color and visually building a future "home.
To separate the kitchen area from the living room, and also to add a touch of industrial influence, Berkus installed a glass and wrought iron wall between the two spaces. "This artifice provides continuity to the space and fluidizes it visually. An open space in which delimitations are not introduced is not always the best solution.
Dressing the stairs in rattan, replacing the railing with a solid wood one and adding decorations in the same natural style significantly contribute to the final result which amazes through its simplicity and the aura of comfort it exudes.
The sense of spaciousness was achieved through the use of another stylistic artifice: the texture of mirrors in as many areas of the house as possible. This procedure can visually double the space. In Karlie's home, I used antiqued mirror panels which I mounted on the ceiling. The stylistic story continues with a glass shelf and portions of mirror that perfectly complement the concept.
Regarding furniture, the supermodel didn't want to turn her home into a showroom of expensive items, so she rejected Berkus's initial proposals: "Karlie was lovely. She liked the ideas, but the final cost didn't reflect her way of seeing things. She asked us to keep the direction, but find more affordable alternatives.
The designer selected several vintage objects to serve as the central elements of the décor and then shaped the overall atmosphere with simple decorative pieces sourced from retailers such as Target, Ballard Designs, and Ikea.
