Vipt is a rare word in Dacoromanian today (it appears sporadically in Transylvania), but it exists in all three South Danubian dialects (Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian), which shows that it was an important word long ago. It was the common term for food in general, being inherited from Latin (victus).
Initially, in the Hurmuzachi Psalter, vipt had the meaning of aliment from Latin, fruit of the earth. Today its meaning has narrowed to food for humans. In Transylvania there is the expression a lua în vipt (to take in as a guest), which is opposed to nutreț (animal feed, fodder).
Nutreț is also inherited from Latin (nutricium), derived from nutrire - to feed. In Romanian there were for feeding and food a verb (a nutri) and two nouns vipt and nutreț, all inherited from Latin.
The wordsSlavic hraniti and hrană have taken the place of a nutri and vipt, but they have not eliminated nutreț.
