For someone passionate about gardening, winter is a well-deserved rest period, where the only major concern is clearing the yard of snow. For many, however, it is also a time of waiting, eagerly anticipating seeing their garden green again and the trees in bloom.

For a true farmer, however, the last few weeks of winter are a good opportunity to get their ducks in a row so that they can start spring work in the yard on the right foot. We'll help you with a short list of tasks you should consider in the coming period.

1. Repair the house fence

Even though it's cold outside, this time is perfect for small or large repairs around the yard. The first thing you need to check is the house fence. Months of frost and blizzards, plus the pressure of snow if it has snowed abundantly, have left their mark.

It is preferable to repair any joints and cracks now, so that you have more time for the actual gardening work when the soil thaws.

The surrounding fence is important both aesthetically and, above all, for your safety and the animals in your household. You can't just repair it with wire and a few nails: for such a job you need an efficient welding machine that is easy to handle and suitable for your needs.

2. Check and repair the roof and gutters

Just like in the case of the fence, the roof of the house and the gutters can suffer considerable damage during a harsh winter, especially if you haven't repaired them for a long time. Take the time to carefully check the roof tiles. If there are any broken or detached pieces, leaks and infiltrations may appear at the first spring rain.

Also, check the attic, if it has windows, to make sure that their frames do not allow water to penetrate the dwelling. Not only these need to be checked - you can call a specialist to recalibrate all your windows and doors. Last but not least, the house gutters should be cleaned of leaves and branches so that the water can flow efficiently.

3. Tidy up your workshop or tool shed

If you have a workshop for tools and gardening equipment, it probably looks like a battlefield after the few months of winter. As soon as the weather allows, reorganize the space and throw away broken objects. In addition, if in the fall you put up pickles or stored vegetables and fruits for the winter, it's time to see what can still be used and throw away the rest.

It is also advisable to do a quick check of the tools you will need as soon as it warms up outside. The spade and shovel should be sharpened and replaced if necessary -, the garden shears and the vine tying machine should be within reach. Don't forget to replenish your stock of string, stakes, nails and anything else you know you will need soon.
