How to Decorate Walls Using a Stencil

Not everyone has a passion for paintings or photographs, and wall stickers can remind some too much of classic wallpaper. On the other hand, no one wants bare walls devoid of personality. The solution for these people is to decorate using a stencil.

Stencil graffiti is a form of graffiti that uses a template to apply images onto walls. It essentially represents the negative of a shape which can be used to replicate a design on a wall.

Whether you choose typography art or floral motifs, a stencil will help you achieve an interesting, chic décor and give you the satisfaction of being your own decorator. Here are some tips if you want to decorate your home using a stencil.

First, you need to choose the model you want to replicate on the wall. For example, if you are passionate about cats, you will need to take a very sturdy piece of cardboard and carefully cut out a cat shape. You can make several stencils of different sizes. Choose the color you want to paint with.

If you have white walls, you can choose any color as long as it fits into the overall color scheme of the room.

sure the walls are straight and clean. If you have recently painted your home, allow at least 24 hours to pass before applying the stencil as you need a very dry surface.

Apply the stencil to the wall where you want to position the design. Pour a small amount of paint onto a disposable plate. Dip a wide brush into the paint and then wipe it on a newspaper to remove any excess. You shouldn't have too much paint on the brush, as this could cause it to seep under the edges of the cut-out shape.

Hold the brush perpendicular to the wall and apply the limewash from left to right over the stencil. Apply two coats if necessary, but wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second, without removing the stencil from the wall. Once finished, remove the cardboard and reposition it where you want to paint the next shape.

If you see that the stencil is starting to soften from the paint, cut out a new one.
