Mountain hiking enthusiasts, the highest ecological refuge in Europe has opened, located at 2,150 meters, near Lake Coltun, in the Fagaras Mountains.

Mihai Miclaus is the architect who oversaw the project, believing that implementing such ideas in several mountainous areas of our country will succeed in changing mentalities and that people will learn to appreciate and protect nature more.

The most challenging part of the operation was the aerial transportation of the modular building, which was carried out using a helicopter. The new shelter was previously constructed at the foot of the mountain in the commune of Cartisoara and subsequently transported in pieces to over 2100 meters. Over 35 rescuers and volunteers participated in its installation.

The eco-friendly shelter is designed to house 22 tourists and 4 mountain rescuers in optimal protection conditions. "The chosen material, CLT (or Cross Laminated Timber), is very suitable from different perspectives – resistant to heavy snowfall (6m), lightweight in relation to its strength, friendly surface...and not least for its smell.

Cut at predetermined angles from a dynamic form in strong winds, it was to be covered with aluminum sheeting that takes on the green of the mosses found on the site's stones.

The simple but more than necessary function in one of the most accident-prone areas is straightforward – space for mountain rescue first aid (3 seats) and space for tourists (19 seats).

The location was slightly shifted from the old 40-year-old refuge, for reasons of lake pollution protection and functionality (the platform remains a space for helicopter landings necessary in case of emergency).

The photovoltaic panel installed at the base of the tower, which allows light to enter and for tourists to see the stars, provides energy independence for the tourist structure while simultaneously reinforcing the idea of an eco-conscious attitude.
