It's hard to define your own decorating style and even harder to choose it in the first place. The multitude of existing styles - traditional, romantic, shabby chic, Scandinavian or Mediterranean - all come with their own specificities, but not all can be to our liking. However, there are elements that we can extract and use successfully in our own decorations.

Open GalleryIn our country, design styles have penetrated more slowly and many of them cannot be integrated for various reasons, the main ones being the typology of houses and apartments. Often small and cramped, Romanian homes leave little room for experiments with styles.

However, Alia from Val Decor believes that based on her experience so far, 3 styles predominate in Romania: contemporary, eclectic and vintage, but rarely in their pure form, most often finding only influences, especially for the vintage one.

The contemporary style, sometimes with minimalist tendencies, is the safest approach when we talk about Romanian home furnishings. This style is suitable for small spaces because through its features it amplifies the feeling of spaciousness, emphasizing the idea of open space. The predominant colors are neutral ones and those inspired by nature.

We will also often find the black-and-white duo, as well as splashes of bold colors. Decorations and accessories are not excessively used, but they are well highlighted. Clean lines, curved lines and uncomplicated surfaces predominate. Lighting fixtures have metallic finishes, often being works of art in their own right.

Geometric motifs are often found in the modern style through prints and patterns, either in the structure of wallpaper, carpets or decorative pillows.

On the other hand, the eclectic style comes as a support for those who want more than just simple lines and neutrality. Eclectic means, in general terms, a combination of features, namely elements belonging to certain styles without an apparent connection between them, but which brought together manage to communicate and create harmony at the level of the decoration.

Broadly speaking, an eclectic decor reflects the personality of the person who lives in that particular house. Nothing seems to make sense, but at the same time, through juxtaposition and combination, things take on a special meaning.

Alia gives a rather vivid description: the eclectic style is the one that allows you to combine different things and bring them together, to put together a part from here, a part from there, a little bit from each. It's like our history, if you will. A variety of influences from the most diverse sources that have led to what we are today.

Vintage comes more in the form of influences and less in its pure form.

Here are some of the brands of this style: old objects or furniture with an aged look (you can find them in antique shops) which emanate a nostalgic, romantic air, pastels, antiqued finishes, reminiscent of the 1940s-1950s, refined but comfortable rooms, upholstery with floral patterns, lace, porcelain, old books.
