Slugs can be a real nuisance for gardeners, devouring leaves, flowers, and fruits. There are a number of methods you can use to protect your flowers from these voracious pests.
Preventive Methods:
Physical Barriers: Create a physical barrier around your flowers using materials such as:
Onion: Slice onions and place them around the flowers. The strong smell of onion will deter slugs.
Coffee: Sprinkle coffee grounds around the flowers. Slugs do not appreciate the bitter taste of coffee.
Citrus Peels: Place citrus peels (lemon, orange, grapefruit) around the flowers. Slugs are repelled by the citrus scent.
Plants: Plant plants known to repel slugs, such as: mustard (the strong smell of mustard will deter slugs); lavender (the floral scent of lavender will keep slugs away); rosemary (the essential oil in rosemary is toxic to slugs); sage (the strong smell of sage will deter slugs).
Manual Removal: Go out at night with a flashlight and manually collect slugs from the garden. You can throw the slugs into a container of soapy water or take them far away from your garden.
