Gregory Kloehn is an artist from Oakland, California, who came up with a brilliant idea to create small, mobile homes for less fortunate people, those who live on the streets.
He started his project “Houses for the Homeless” at the moment he realized that he could apply his skills and knowledge in construction to help people who needed it and who could benefit from it.
He began by searching in areas where garbage is illegally dumped, in an industrial neighborhood in Oakland, finding all sorts of recycled objects which he recovered and attached to pre-made creations of his own, thus having the necessary materials to build the mobile homes.
The foundations are made from pallet stacks, the front door can be a refrigerator door, and the windows are actually windows from washing machines.
Each house is built on wheels so that it can be pushed and moved anywhere. They also have a sloping roof to "roll off" raindrops.
The houses for the homeless are different from each other, as are the objects they contain inside, so in one we can find a mirror, in another a wardrobe, cups, and the list goes on.
What is most important after all, is the fact that each house provides a roof over someone's head, even if the dwelling is very small.
