Cats have a unique way of expressing their well-being. Unlike dogs, who are more vocal and overt in their expressions, cats are subtler but still very clear if you know what to look for. A happy and relaxed cat conveys through its behavior and body language that it feels good in your home – the place it considers home.
In this article we present the most common and clear signs that your cat is happy, emotionally balanced and feels safe in the environment where it lives.
1. Purrs often and with pleasure

However, it should be mentioned that sometimes cats may purr when they are scared or sick, to self-soothe. Context is important – if the purring comes along with cheerful and affectionate behavior, it's clear that she's happy.
2. Makes "kneading" motions with its paws
A lovable and very common gesture in contented cats is "kneading," when they press alternately with their front paws, usually on a blanket, your chest, or a soft pillow. This behavior is taken from the nursing period, when kittens stimulated lactation this way. If it does so as an adult, it means that it feels safe and shows you a deep form of affection.
3. Stretches out on its back and shows its belly
If a cat shows you its belly in your presence – especially if it stretches out completely on its back – it is a sign of maximum trust. The abdominal area is a vulnerable one, and if it exposes it without fear, it means that it feels safe next to you. Be careful though: some cats accept being petted on the belly, others don't – so read their body language too!
4. Follows you around the house and asks for attention
A relaxed and sociable cat won't stay hidden all the time. If your cat follows you from room to room, settles down next to or on you when you're on the sofa, "talks" to you (light, short meows) and seeks eye contact, then it's clear that it considers you "its person" and has a strong emotional bond with you.
5. Sleeps soundly and in open places

Cats sleep an average of 12 to 16 hours a day, and the places they choose for sleeping can tell you a lot about their mood. If your cat sleeps in open places, in plain sight, lying on its side or back, it means that it doesn't feel threatened. Deep sleep and a relaxed posture are clear signs that it feels comfortable and protected.
