Although it initially caught attention when it began to be popular among jewelers, this style has also made a strong impression on recent trends in interior design.

It is an interior design style characterized by elements derived from the early period of the technological revolution in the mid-19th century. It began to take shape in the late 1980s and is based on science fiction literature, particularly that which explores themes such as alternate history, fantasy, or utopian technological revolutions.

Within a steampunk design, you will use objects that are replicas of airships, compasses, vintage aviator goggles, levers, clockwork mechanisms, replicas of steam engines, etc., as well as modern elements redesigned in this manner, such as laptops for example.

You will have valves or pistons instead of handles for cabinets, the ceiling lights could just as well take the shape of a Zeppelin and the light switch mechanism can be a complex gear system of levers and pistons.

The materials used are clearly copper, brass, and iron, but what is interesting to note is that the basic elements and those used as accents and focal points are deeply inspired by the Victorian era. Examples include hats, chosen textiles (often velvet or heavy lace), old sketches and photographs used as decorations, desks with secret compartments, etc.

Decorative elements don't stop there. Collections of steam locomotive models, pocket watches, typewriters, old nautical charts and the vessels they served can all be found in the home of an enthusiast of this kind.

Steampunk interiors are not rich in color, but rather in tones of brown, rust red, bronze, or the color of solid wood. Contrary to expectations, although an industrial style, these designs are not cold at all and are often described as being loaded and perhaps suffocating at times.
