For all those who live in small apartments, the living room is not just the room where we receive guests, but also a space for storing various things. Therefore, we need to combine the aesthetic side with the functional one for optimal use.
Open GalleryWhat options do we have available? First of all, we need to know what our needs are and especially to take into account the space we have.
Do we live in a 40 square meter apartment with a tiny living room or do we have a generous living area that we can configure with multiple subfunctions? Do we want a spacious library or do we prefer an airy living room, uncluttered by furniture? Once we have the answers to these questions, we will be able to focus on the configuration of the furniture to achieve what we need.
Custom-made furniture is a suitable solution because this way you will have pieces perfectly adapted to the space. Where can you start? Sketch around the television a system of modular shelves or suspended shelves to take over books, boxes with documents, decorations and CDs. Choose a medium height so that on the space above you can display some paintings.
If you want to visually separate two functions, use furniture pieces, such as open shelves or medium-height dressers inside which you can store some of your belongings, and above them display a few decorative pieces for a pleasant aesthetic.
You can also use multiple walls for storage; for example, in the case of a square configuration, you can outline spaces for the library on two walls, ensuring continuity between them. You can use only long shelves or alternate with areas with closed cabinets or drawers.
Do you need a work area and the living room is the only place where you can set it up? A simple and efficient option is to integrate it in continuation of the furniture around the television or the bookcase.
If you need more storage space for clothes and decide to introduce it into the living room, we recommend placing it as close to the door of the room as possible. The further you move towards the window, the more you allow the space to breathe by removing those pieces of furniture that could visually assault the room. This recommendation is especially valid for a long and narrow living room.
We hope that all these ideas inspire you, and above all, the selected interior design models in the photo gallery above.
