When we speak of unconventional spaces, we think of atypical constructions, of Gaudi's houses, of Louis I Kahn's monumental buildings, of controversial architects who left future generations with true architectural masterpieces and laid the foundations for artistic currents. Looking back at their perfection, we wonder what the 21st century can bring new to the field.
Answers are found at every turn for those who have eyes to see, and here and there we encounter focal points, landmarks, constructed with such skill and creativity that they leave us breathless.
Today on GaleriaAstazi we're talking about one such place, a church in the Philippines known as the 100 Walls Church. It was created by the CAZA (Carlos Arnaiz Architects) architecture studio from New York, renowned for their bold and unique projects.
Currently, they are working on a university center in Costa Rica, a resort in the Philippines, and a market in Bogota, Colombia. They are also finalists in the selection process for the architecture and design firm that will build the Center for Contemporary Music in Taipei.
Let's return to the magnificent construction of the Church of 100 Walls. Its surface area is nearly 9,000 square meters, and costs amounted to 4 million dollars. All walls are built on parallel lines, oriented in the same direction, so that when viewed from one side, the church appears completely opaque, and when viewed from the other side, completely transparent.
Regardless of our perspective within these two limits, the whole generates a captivating play of light and shadow. This interplay of light is all the more spectacular as the architects chose to install stained-glass skylights, which cast magnificent bands of vibrant hues onto the church floor and walls.
Within its 100 walls, you will discover sunken gardens, mysterious vaults, majestic doors and spacious halls bathed in natural light. A labyrinth of rooms symbolizes the course of life for each of us, with the countless paths we choose to take.
This monumental church is proof that spirituality is not necessarily captured within fortified spaces, with walls painted with icons, but can convey the same concepts and offer the same comfort to its visitors, built atypically, uniquely, challenging the limits of design.
