The table created by the Amarist workshop is a perfect example of the combination between contemporary art and design. The sculptural table is made from a glass cube containing burnt money with a small biofuel flame rising above its surface.
Every intricate detail was considered while the artist meticulously reproduced banknotes through gluing and coloring each individual piece of paper.
However, according to the artist, the most complicated part of the entire process was simulating the effect of burnt paper while it is engulfed in flames without actually using fire to do so.
This effect required the use of a very realistic technique that simulates the effect of burning fire by transforming and hardening ash with resins. Consequently, this piece of furniture is made to provoke deeper thinking in the minds of those who observe it regarding the meaning and value of money, time, and people.
A banknote is a painted piece of paper representing a number, 10, 20, 50 dollars, yen, euros. A number that we exchange to be able to buy something we desire. A number that in itself has no more value than the number we give for a service or the time we exchange, said Monge trying to explain the concept behind this table.
