Ikea announced this week the launch of a new product, specially created for playful cat owners who constantly destroy furniture in the house. KÄT is the first sofa designed to withstand cats' scratches. Often, the sofa is the first victim in the furniture category and usually the most damaged over time.

The KÄT sofa is a hybrid sofa that includes normal cushions for comfortable seating, while the base is made from a type of lightweight corrugated cardboard with striations perfect for cats sharpening their claws on the sofa, this time without destroying the textile material of the sofa.

The cardboard comes from wood in northern Sweden, Ikea's home country. The wood is processed so that every cubic centimeter is used to the maximum.

An Ikea spokesperson admitted that the idea for such furniture came after a study the company conducted to better understand how people coexist with their pets and especially the behavior of cats (for this product) inside the home.
