Hanging baskets with flowers are a true visual delight. They bring color, volume and elegance to any balcony, terrace or veranda. We all admire those cascades of petunias, marigolds and verbena that look spectacular in May, at the beginning of the season.
However, very often, enthusiasm fades during the summer, when the heat sets in, and our once lush baskets begin to look tired, sparse with elongated shoots.
The good news is that keeping them in top shape throughout the summer is not an impossible mission. It's not about a single magic trick, but about a series of simple and constant care gestures.
1. Choose a basket of generous size
The first step towards success begins even before planting. A larger basket is not just a matter of aesthetics. A more generous volume of soil means it will retain moisture for longer and provide more root space to develop. Small baskets dry out extremely quickly on hot summer days, subjecting the plants to constant stress.
Invest in a basket with a diameter of at least 30-35 cm to give your plants a solid start.
2. Group plants with similar needs
When choosing flowers, make sure they have the same light and water requirements. Don't combine a shade-loving plant with one that needs direct sunlight.
Create a harmonious arrangement using plants with different habits: a central, vertical plant (such as a zonal geranium), intermediate plants that fill the space (e.g., petunias) and trailing plants to create a cascading effect (e.g., verbena, calibrachoa, bacopa).
3. Watering is the key to success
This is probably the most important rule. Hanging baskets are exposed to wind and sun from all sides, which leads to rapid soil drying.
Check daily: In summer days, it's almost guaranteed that you'll need to water daily, and during heat waves, even twice a day (early morning and late evening).
