Green roofs represent the most ecological ways to cover a building. They are layers of vegetation mounted on the upper surfaces of buildings. Plants provide shade on hot summer days, an extra coolness compared to classic roofs, but can also be considered true air purifiers.
We find this topic very interesting so we tried to find out more from S IM AC EK Gardening, a major player in the green roof market. The company's portfolio in Romania has evolved significantly in recent times, and the domestic offer of the S IM AC EK group is becoming increasingly diverse as the local market matures.
When did you start this business and why?
We have been dealing with green roofs since 2010. From the beginning, our company's objective for Romania has been to ensure professional services for design, landscaping and maintenance so that we can enjoy functional and sustainable green spaces.
Always oriented towards innovative solutions and green techniques, we saw green roofs as an efficient and achievable solution to bring as much nature as possible back into our gray cities. This is how our story begins in greening the urban landscape.
Where did the idea of green roofs originate in the world?
Green roofs have a longer history than one might think, examples being the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Ziggurats of Mesopotamia or even the houses of the Vikings long ago. People have taken over the knowledge of their ancestors and valued it today to obtain functional long-term green roof systems integrated into modern architectural styles.
What types of services can you offer your clients?
As mentioned earlier, we offer our clients both design and landscaping services, as well as maintenance services.
Regarding green roofs, the design of buildings comes from architects and implicitly green roofs are included here, but through close collaboration with architectural firms, our involvement often occurs during the design phase when we provide the necessary technical support regarding the resolution of typical solutions and vegetation, collaboration that continues afterwards with the builder.
A large part of our activity is related to the implementation of projects and the maintenance of green surfaces.
What types of clients do you generally have? Companies or individuals?
We are happy to respond to the requests of all those who are interested in green spaces.
Large-scale projects are usually found in the retail sector, office buildings/residential complexes or industrial ones that have larger surfaces and where collaboration is done with companies, but the private sector is also quite active with many individuals who want green roofs for their homes for ecological reasons, energy efficiency or just for relaxation in their own oasis of greenery.
