For those living in a yard, building a wattle fence can be a great opportunity to put their dexterity into practice. To make such a fence, you only need patience and plenty of willow or alder rods. This type of fence can be an unusual way to beautify the yard and give it a rustic look.

Elasticity

What is the secret of these rods? Elasticity! After the rods have been harvested to the desired size, they are placed in a container with water and left to soak for about 5 days. Soaking makes them very flexible and after this process they can be molded as desired.

Determining the location and digging holes for posts

After determining the location where you want to install such a fence, dig holes in which the support posts for the rods will be inserted. We advise you to start with a smaller section of the fence until you gain some experience. The support posts should be cut to the desired size depending on how tall you want the wattle fence to be.

Setting the level

After inserting the posts into the holes and securing them, proceed to set the level. Tie a string to the end of the first post and tie it to the end of the last post. These are the most important ones, so measure carefully and make sure they are the same height. If you notice that the other posts do not respect the height, adjust them and bring them to the same level.

Weaving the rods horizontally

If you have never woven a wattle fence before but want to try it, it would be wise to consider horizontal weaving, as this is the simplest method. If you wove the first rod on the front side, weave the next one on the back side of the fence.

The following rods are not woven from the end of the first rod, but about halfway and further so that they interlock.

If you are a meticulous person and want to finish the fence after completion, you could apply a coat of varnish. This will give the fence a very pleasant color and higher resistance to moisture. Good luck!
