Words that have, at their distant origin, the same Greek word typhos - smoke and its derivative typhein - to emit smoke. The words entered Latin: in Gallic Latin they reached from the Greek spoken in Marseille (extupare). These words derived from typhos were not transmitted to the Romanian language.
In Romanian, the Latin derivatives exturpare and extufare have arrived through various paths:
in etuvă a steam bath, a sealed apparatus used in sterilizations. It comes from French etuve which has its origin in extupa - bathhouse, especially for a steam bath - etuver - to emit steam.
