The transformation project of this barn located in the province of Caceres, Spain, belongs to the Abaton Architects architecture firm. The main criteria pursued were the complete preservation of the building's structure and the use of eco-friendly materials for the renovation works. Where others saw only a ruin, these architects saw a construction with enormous potential.

This work aims to demonstrate that new interventions in a territory through the construction of additional buildings are not always necessary, and that sometimes recycling, reuse, or renovation of existing buildings or materials is sufficient to create interesting and sustainable outcomes.

Open the GalleryThis rustic dwelling is situated on a 5-hectare plot of land, and the materials (stone and wood) and finishes used for its design were carefully chosen to respect the character of the area. Although it appears to be single-story, the generous height of the barn allowed for the creation of an additional floor. On the ground floor, there is a living room that opens onto a terrace and a pool.

The ground floor features numerous open spaces that connect with each other and the exterior through large glazed areas. These extensive glazed surfaces allow natural light to penetrate the house for a significantly longer period during the day, thus minimizing energy consumption.

We can see that wooden and metal gates have been installed which open completely, ensuring proper ventilation during hot summer evenings. The floor comprises three Bedrooms and other related spaces.

This 95 square meter dwelling also benefited from the installation of solar panels and hydroelectric turbines To harness energy from nearby waterways, the area being isolated from the electricity grid, the dwelling is powered year-round by renewable energy sources: solar panels in the summer and hydroelectric turbines in the winter.

In the world, interest for eco-friendly houses The movement towards a healthier lifestyle with greater respect for the environment is gaining momentum.
