When it comes to furnishing the living room, one of the most frequent questions is: do I put tiles or parquet? If you are in the middle of a renovation or just moving into a new home, you have surely already discussed this topic with friends, family or craftsmen. And the answer isn't that simple.
The truth is that both options have their advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on the style of the house, how you use the space and – not least – how you want to feel when you enter the living room.
Let's take them one by one, without technical jargon and with as concrete examples as possible.
Parquet offers warmth, comfort and that unmistakable "home" feeling
It is ideal if you want a welcoming, bright and relaxing living room. It fits perfectly in houses furnished in Scandinavian, classic, boho, rustic or modern cozy style.
What parquet offers you:
It's warmer than tiles, especially in winter
Absorbs sound – goodbye echo or noisy footsteps
Comes in a multitude of shades and finishes – from off-white to dark walnut
Installs quickly, especially the laminated one with click system
But it also has downsides:
It is sensitive to moisture (be careful if you have young children or pets)
Can be scratched or swell if not properly maintained
Not the best choice if you have underfloor heating (only some models are compatible)
Tiles offer resistance, modern style and zero hassle If you want something super resistant, easy to clean and suitable for an active lifestyle, tiles are hard to beat. They don't stain, they don't scratch, they're not afraid of a wet mop. And in recent years, they have evolved a lot – there are models that perfectly imitate wood, concrete, natural stone or even linen fabric.
They fit perfectly into contemporary, industrial, minimalist or Mediterranean settings.
